A Garden Doily

Time for another doily fix!

Yes, I finally finished this lavender doily that I started a while

back.  This one will be a gift for a friend that just

celebrated her 50th Birthday.

We've been friends for 40 years!

This pattern is from Book 5 of

A Year of Doilies.

It was the first time I've ever worked the

"popcorn" stitch with thread.

I love the texture this stitch creates.

In this piece it makes me think of grapes or lilacs.

Then, while I was out in the garden one day,

I saw this!

An artichoke plant.

I've really never seen anything like it, have you?

I mean, is this the same artichoke that we buy at the store and eat?

I didn't realize they were so pretty.

This bee was SO busy, he wouldn't sit still for me to get a

shot of him.  Look at all the pollen on him!

So, tell me what you know about this plant.

I'd love to know more about it.

Well, now that I've finished this piece, what's next on the

crochet agenda?

I still have other projects that I haven't completed, so maybe I'll

finish one of those.

After working with small thread, sometimes I like to

switch and work with yarn for a while.

I'm off to enjoy the rest of the long Labor Day weekend.

We are still enjoying lovely weather, so it's

back outside for me!

Sending good wishes your way,

Becca

The doily is lovely! I know your friend will be thrilled with such a beautiful gift....one that takes a lot of time and skill. I am still crocheting some. I'm making little hearts right now but I want to find a pattern for a small flower next. Enjoy your evening! Hugs!

Becca, your pale lavender doily is absolutely beautiful! I love the way the color and shape match the artichoke plant. Nature provides so much inspiration.

This is what happens to artichokes left on the stalk past picking time, they blossom! And they are in the same family as thistles and cardoons! Lovely doilies too! Mary Anne

Really pretty pattern Becca. Lucky friend. Amazing photos of that artichoke, they are so surreal, I expect dinosaurs to be munching on them, they seem old old. xox

Gorgeous! Both the doily and the artichoke. I've never seen one growing before. I wonder if it is related to a thistle.

Purple!! =D

Goodness! Your crochet skills seem to be growing!! =) Wonderful!! =) xo

Disneyland uses blooming artichokes for landscaping in Tomorrowland. If I remember correctly, everything growing in Tomorrowland is edible and beautiful at the same time! =)

Oooo... LOVE the lavender color! Your friend will be so happy... A great gift to celebrate her, and your 40-year friendship... WOW--40 years!! Oh, yes, that's a buy-at-the-store-and-eat kind of artichoke! If you let them go, like other food plants they do come into flower and bloom. These are lovely! Enjoy the long holiday weekend, Becca ((HUGS))
Wow! Your crochet is superb! I've tried working with thread but I feel like I am all thumbs. Your doily is absolutely gorgeous! And that artichoke plant is lovely. It's funny that we don't really think about how things grow, what they look like or where they come from. Like the first time I saw a cinnamon tree in Sri Lanka. Who knew that cinnamon sticks actually from the bark of the cinnamon tree. Never really thought about it before. :) Have a great week. Tammy

What a gorgeous post! The artichokes remind me of Protea, which is one of my favorite flowers from Hawaii. Thanks for sharing!

Oh my goodness what a gorgeous doily you have created - superb!
Love also your artichoke plants and yes those are the ones we eat - we grow them in our garden here and that is exactly the gorgeous flower. We eat the hearts of the plant and they are divine!
Enjoy!
