A photo of "Mom"

This is an 8x10 canvas collage using a copy of a vintage photo of my mother. I just love her little hair cut and the expression she has on her face.
This was the first time I've ever tried polymer clay on canvas. I stamped into the clay then used walnut ink to stain. I'm really happy with the results and look forward to trying that again soon. Other collage items are just decorative papers. I have lots of memories of my mom at her sewing machine, so I also used some old pattern pieces.

It's still too hot here for me to think about fall, so I thought I'd share some photographs I took this last spring. I never get tired of taking photographs especially in the garden.
Happy Monday!

No "fake" sky here

Not your typical blue Las Vegas sky.

Unfortunately, these clouds didn't bring the much needed rain I was hoping for but gave us some interesting, cooler weather for a day or two.

It was a nice change anyway, it'll be back to sunny and blue tomorrow .

Have a great week!

Feeling Nostalgic in Boulder City

This past weekend we took a little 40 mile drive from Las Vegas to Boulder City. This quaint little town near Lake Mead in Nevada is where I was born, oh let's just say...a few years ago. Back then, the old hospital was up on top of a hill near the park. You can see the lake from the other side. The park is still beautiful and green as ever and the old drinking fountain is still there from when I was a child.

Dad and Cis helping me get a drink of water from the fountain.

I didn't need any help with the fountain this time.

I still love to visit Boulder City. It's a perfect place to spend a beautiful day with a friend walking around rummaging through all the antique shops. Then when you get tired you can walk over to the Wine bar & bistro for a glass of vino on the patio, or over at the Boulder Dam Brewery, you can get yourself a Dam Beer and some Dam food! If neither of those settings is what you're looking for, maybe a "spot of tea" at the Treasured Times Tea Room would suite your fancy. A lovely little vintage room, beautiful china, and delicious teas, cakes & finger sandwiches.

This large emporium has a large selection of antiques, gifts and crafts. I can usually spend hours in there and still not see everything.

Everything is beautifully displayed.

Two stories of antiques and gifts

Shopping for old fashioned candies and soda while watching vintage cartoons. Fun!

This quilt shop has so many beautiful fabrics and they offer a variety of classes.

This is a view of the lobby of the Boulder Dam Hotel

These are some of the little motels on the main drag, Nevada Hwy through Boulder City. I like the vintage feel of the old, neon signs. Also, as a note of interest, the motels are named after a few of the big hotels on the Las Vegas strip. Each look as though they are still very well maintained.

On the way out of town is this little drive thru with an ice cream cone on top of the sign. Even though this place has gone through different owners and a few changes, they still have the "soft serve ice cream" that I remember my Mom loved so much.

So thank you Boulder City for keeping that "small town feel" that I remember when I was a child. I'm sure I'll be returning again soon for the annual Art in the Park in October. For now, I'll just have a vanilla ice cream cone to go.

Enjoying the simple things

The past couple of days I've had some extra time to just relax and unwind. Sometimes the best remedy for stress is to surround yourself with the things that make you happy. I find that a lot of those things are right here at home.

Only 1 more day until the weekend!

Inland Empire

A short trip to Los Angeles, California for business and a little fun. A visit to an art gallery for a viewing of photographs taken by David Lynch with music by Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse...weird. Off to Santa Monica and Malibu for some "ocean time" and a little shopping. Fun to see some of the LA weirdness again.

A fun British Pub in Santa Monica
Grauman's Chinese Theatre
